Discussion of "Graph"(draft) by dogdeity11

that's an idea, dog... I was thinking of writing a really ambiguous first chapter, one that could open the floor for all genres, but if we can all find a time-clock chapter that we agree on, then we can go that route as well... The graph looks good, we could go that way, or as I stated on my post in a comment, we could buddy up into teams... once we get our 8th person, we can hash everything out to the most feasible... I just think this is going to be a major blast... and can work out in a manner where we can all hone ourselves a little more and learn from one another.

also... we don't have to limit any of the branches to a chapter limit... one storyline could end up being 5 chapters, while another could end up being 25... the goal is to see how many directions one story can take and how many genres it can cross from just one chapter...

I think I see what your saying. so...it would sort of just be a 'free for all' then...people MASHing wherever they wanted...as long as they didn’t MASH their own continuation?
If that’s the case…I don’t really see how its much different that normal…except for the fact that you cant MASH on your own continuation. However, if as you envision, a storyline goes 25 chapters…then obviously some of the 8 identified authors would be contributing multiple times to the same storyline. Conversely, if one only goes 5 chapters…it doesn’t seem fair that that one should end before everyone gets a chance to MASH it.
Or…perhaps I’m just really over thinking this?
I think your idea is awesome…if we work with the Graph.
That way…each MASHer is forced to consider their place in a particular storyline and write accordingly.
With the graph established, each author knows he/she has an opportunity at MASH in each chapter and also has an opportunity to MASH in each of the eight-storyline slots.
No MASHer is writing a chapter with the intention of jumping back in down the line to continue certain aspects of it…get it? You writing for someone else to continue.
It will require more time certainly...and some patience...and I think more skill. But I suspect in the end the pay-off will be worth it as we will create 8 distinctive storylines, all of the same length, all stemming from one initial chapter.

(Apologies psycho if I am perverting your idea too much. Just trying to make it fair and equal for all MAShers. However, I don’t want to ruin the fun for everyone if this is too convoluted. Whatever is decided I’ll contribute to.)

I'm likin the idead of the graph... I posted my e-mail on the original post of this in a comment... I have everybody on board that's gettin on board for this one... we just all need to agree on how we wanna do this... I agree totally with fairness in the interest of all... and I think maybe a chapter cap would be in order... but it would end up being 9 chapters each story, not 8, because the initial starting chapter will be the same for every storyline...

If you wanna help me hash this out, email me and we can maybe get together on the phone and come up with a solid plan of action... If it wasn't obvious, the idea to do this came to me today and I just threw it out there...

I'm with eleven. The strict form of it will be the challenge... and the fun if you ask me. You can't wait to jump in whenever you want, you have to take what you get and make something of it. It's a real test of skills that way. And with a definite ending in sight, you have the added challenge of keeping the story tight and moving. I love it, 8 stories finished in 8 chapters (not counting the first one I mean). Of course, I'm in however it goes... just my two cents.

That seems to be the most popular consensus so far, so it works for me... so, if everyone else agrees, we lock it in at 8 chapters per person, one on each storyline... The more I think about it, the better it sounds... and I was thinking, if we do it like that, a timeline of one month. That's 4 weeks, 2 chapters per person due each week. If it cannot be accomplished by deadline, then a sub can be made... from the 8... as long as it doesn't conflict with the idea that no one can continue their own chapter...

BTW.. if it counts for anything... I'm kinda liking October Chill...

I like october chill and I like my reality. I honestly don't understand how fat man in the shower has such a high score.

Doesn't matter to me what the initial chapter is. One concern is the fact that we're always following the same author. I always mash Honey's work. Don't get me wrong; I've enjoyed her chapters and I'm lucky to work from a quality setup. I think it might work better with set starters and finishers and random in-betweeners. Dunno if you just want to roll dice and fill in the names or use some computer equation to rotate the people fairly, or leave it the way it is. There's my pair o' Links.

Makes sense, ups the stakes that much more. The idea is a challenge and so far we all have fairly unique styles. This way you won't be able to get used to anything.

That's a good point, I think what we need to do is something like this...

number the storylines, give everyone a set number to begin and end, then randomize the in-between chapters... the graph that eleven made up was just a model, used to lay out the idea of how it would work... I could just set a responsibility schedule and we could go from there... basically it would be something like this:

a= author
c= chapter
s= storyline

a1/s1/c2 (designates start point)
a1/s4/c3
a1/s7/c4
a1/s5/c5
a1/s2/c6
a1/s6/c7
a1/s3/c8
a1/s8/c9 (designates end)

Each of us will be designated an author #, each of our start #'s will coincide with our author #, and then have a mixed mash as far as in-between chapters and who follows who and so on and so forth... everyone email me and I will et up the designations and mass email them back to everyone so that we may begin... sound cool?

I actually tried to manipulate the graph so that each author only appeared once in each storyline and only once writing the same chapter…and not following the same author…but it was like trying to unravel a tesseract. I don’t know…maybe it was the drink…or the baseball game…or the basketball playoffs….or the new episode of South Park…but I finally threw in the toweelie.

You can start whenever you'd like... Like I said in the last comment, the official start is Sunday, and the sooner the first 8 chapters are done and named, the sooner I can put together a chart...

These are your author numbers... also, these are the storyline numbers, as they are the storyline you will start. I want to shoot for a max of 6 weeks for timeframe... all chapters for all 8 stories must meet this deadline... I am going to post this on a story on each of your pages... If you cannot meet a deadline, there are 2 subs you may contact and use, I will inform them that they will be alternates because they wanted to take part but did not get in fast enough... they are writerwannabe and wsells... you may sub out to either of them or any other author taking part in this endeavor.

The chosen start chapter will be October Chill because it has a lot of potential...

Each storyline will have a unique name, but, to keep things from getting confusing, each subsequent chapter will start with the name of the storyline, colon, then your chapter name...the way that my Cry-baby Bridge series is titled through the subsequent chapters, if you are unsure of what I mean, check it out... this will help keep us all organized... once all 8 initial Chapter 2's are published, I will break down the randomized chapter assignments and post them for everyone to look at so that I may use the storyline names to assign them out... I will post them as a comment on THE ORIGINAL POST that I made announcing this endeavor... It will be the responsibility of each of you to check back to see the assignments AND comment to acknowledge... Sunday is going to be the official start, so 6 weeks from then, we should all be finished... good luck to each and every one of you... and have as much fun with this as possible... if this works out well, I plan to host another and any one of you may feel free to do the same, I just hope I get invited to take part...lol...

Should we identify the lines and numbers in the title of each mash? What I mean is something like: October Chill :5:1: MyChapterName (for my initial mash), October Chill :5:2: nextChapterName (for whoever comes after me in that line), etc ...

the numbers aren't really necessary... Once I post the chapter assignments, everyone will know who they follow in each storyline... so it will go like this... Say for my first chapter, I name it Fallen Leaves... then you have to write the follow up, it will be... Fallen Leaves: your chapter name

It took me awhile, but I have it laid out so that it is diverse in order and everyone has a start, an end, and a chapter in each story without constantly following the same person from beginning to end. This should satisfy the needs of everyone involved, I should think... One side note, if the start chapters are not all in place by this Thursday, you forfeit your slot to one of the alternates/subs so that we can stay on target for the 6 week timeframe... I figure 5 days for each chapter to be posted is ample time and since we are officially beginning tomorrow, Thursday is the first cut-off... second installment is due by the following Tuesday and so on... I need to be told if you are going to sub a chapter... That being said, happy writing...

The first two and last two were easy to figure out. The middle four were more touch-and-go, but I think this provides an opportunity for each writer to follow between 5-7 others. You've got the final say, Psycho - it's your animal.

This model doesn't seem to work much better, at least from my perspective. For example...I follow my own chapter 5...then follow the same writer for the final two.
same with psycho from chap 3-4.

8 chapters. 8 authors. design the model that allows for each author to participate in each storyline, while following a different author each time...(or as little as possible.)

I didn't catch that... damn it.... I think the closest we are going to get is my original and we'll have to deal with a bit of following the same author for a few chapters....

Because it seems no matter how we do this, certain Author #s will have to follow certain other Author #s multiple times...I wanted to drop them into a randomizer program I have...in order to shuffle up the authors and try to make it randomly fair for all.

As I began the process however I realized that we had 9 authors. We have a new Masher! OriginalSim....(who by the way provided a really great MASH)
Okay…so we have three other MASHers who have yet to submit a chapter. Shadow…who has already chimed in and said he was working on it. ElevatorMusic who actually knows the original author of October Chill so most likely will be submitting something soon. And Houlgrave, who hasn’t logged back in since the day this idea was posted by psycho.
What to do? Include OS or wait and see if Houl comes back in.
We could simply leave author #5 blank, give Houl until Thursdays deadline, and if he doesn’t show up then use OS. Although, it would be a shame to not continue a MASH on OS’ chapter.

With 9 people, all you need to do for a graph is take any solution to Sudoku. Makes that part of the project so much easier, anyway.

Ok... the problem with that is this... we've been working to make this as fair as possible... Before we can say, ok, include OS, who, by the way, never chimed in to say whether or not they wanted to be part of it... we have WWB and Wsells who are waiting in the wings... according to the original layout of this, OS's chapter is open and fair game to anyone... I was thinking about the whole 9 deal yesterday, actually... and it's not too late to switch to it, but it would need to be fair and I feel that a majority vote of which author should be included as the #9...

OK, not be a hardass or anything, but those who haven't posted yet (Shadow excluded since he let you know he's working on it) should be kicked out for not meeting the deadline right? That leaves two spots for wsells and WWB and the 9th for OS. Or am I being too much of an SM Nazi?? I'm at work so I'm a little cranky:)

That would work, honey and, if you wanted to stick with 8...take out the two that haven't posted and insert OS (who's already posted a great mash..in fact, I didn't even know he wasn't part of the group until just awhile ago..lol) and wsells (he did, in fact raise his hand first. It was like 4 in the am over here while ya'll were doing this...lol). So, at 8 that would leave me out which is okay because I'm a little worried that I might not have the time to keep track of 8 lines of stories and write a chapter every 4 days.
Hmmm...summation. If you want 9 and everyone agrees to honey's solution, okay..count me in. But, if you want 8 don't push for 9 just to get me in...ok? Geesh, I don't even know what writing...lol

The big thing is to put together the finalized graph (not draft) whenever it's ready. Several of us are ready to start chapter 2 and it'd be nice to know who draws who's name for the pollyanna. Sudoku seems the randomest way, but that requires 9. If Houl and Elevator aren't ready (by Thursday, right? Isn't that the original deadline?), pop in other people. If OS's doesn't make the final 8 (or 9), it's still eligible to be mashed by any of us. Without following the same rules (authors can post multiple mashes if they so wish). I'll bow out, relatively gracelessly, from the administrative portion of this mess now and comply with whatever Psycho decides. Unless I don't. And there you are.

Sounds good... also, if we include a ninth, the project dealine will extend 1 week, there will be plenty enough entries for the contest, so if it comes down to it, we don't have to be totally finished by the wrap of the contest... I am thinking that since the numbers just do not crunch right for 8, 9 is the way to go... So, that being said, I'm hoping Wsells is following this so that he may be added... I will leave a message, but could someone else as well? Thanks...

OK - I finally finished mine. Cheeseliker, I hope I gave you something decent to mash. Since round two has an open spot in front of me, I will wait to see what develops. Meanwhile, I can finally read and comment on everyone else's! It's been hard forcing myself not to read them when I pop in to take a look.

Good stuff all around for round 1. I'm a little confused on the graph's "open." As Shadow mentioned, he's following Open - is that merely a bye-week? Mary ends with open, and it'd be a bummer to skip out on an ending. Can someone elaborate?

I have not read every single story of these October Chill sagas.....since I now am on board if I fail to keep the storylines close please be lenient. There is no way basically for me to be able to read them all with my hectic schedule/life so I would appreciate it if everyone would be patient and let me flow.

You do not have to read them all at once. Read the one you need to for your next post, then the next storyline, etc. It's how I'm doing it and works fine for me.

The problem is that Houl is "up" in three story lines...quite a piece of work for poor theblackhand! We'll just have to be patient. I'm sure he'll get to 'em.

Is Houl done? If so then lets replace him so we can move forward. His chapters are really good but his last contribution wasn’t even in the right storyline and hes totally holding things up right now.
Also, regarding story #5…who’s next? The graph had you…but then Houl submit it…so now are you going to do one or is Raven up next? Is Shadow still involved?

theblackhand, the easiest way to figure out which chapter your up for is to scan the beginning chapters, let yoru mouse rest on the chapter and a little pop up will tell you the ranking, chapter name and author.
Current you are up for storylines:
Start - Psycho - last chapter WSELLS
Start - Cheese - last chapter WSELLS
start - Elevator - last chapter- WSELLS

more clarification...scan the beginning chapters from the 'Story Tree' located at the bottom of any OC chapter. Let your mouse rest on one of the 'scroll' icons and the pop up will appear.

In the interest of moving things along, I can take the one that is open on Psycho's story. I think that's the one in the apple orchard right now. Unless someone else wants it...

Maybe it would be better to take the one that Cheese is open for on Elevator's story...

I will complete "Halloween to Remember" by Friday night...Life got in the way again.
I think the goal to have them all completed by the June 20th-contest deadline won't be reached at this point.

My post for Devil's Night is up. I might've accelerated the story too far. I thought I was closer to the end since I was number (7) but for some reason theres still 3 authors ahead of me. Ah well, its done anyways.

My apologies, thought I was in a different place on the graph. I Eleven's storyline was Devil's Night. I guess I should start to work on Eleven's one now.

Suddenly - after weeks of waiting - I'm on the clock twice. Ouch. I'll try to pump 'em out in the next few days. Now I have to go back and reread them to see what the heck I should do.

Apparently I was happier before the prompt to vote - my frontrunners both got hammered. I so wish SM would implement the "must comment to vote," so people would be held accountable (namewise, if not votewise) for tanking a chapter. Dunno if/how the new contest will remedy that issue. Ah well. Maybe I'll luck into $100 next time.
